KSTP reported it does not appear the suspect in custody, a 24-year-old male, had a relationship with the child or the child's family.

"Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge'". An older man tried to stop the suspect and was assaulted by him, witnesses told police. A small portion of the mall is cordoned off on the first and third levels. Our immediate and only concern is for the well-being of the family and the child, as well as for any individuals who may have witnessed the incident.

The suspect, a 24-year-old man, initially fled the scene but was arrested, Potts said. He said a thorough investigation will be conducted to find out the motive for the incident.

The police department is working with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office crime lab to investigate the incident, and they are also working with the mall to determine if any surveillance video exists of the incident.

Officers responded to the incident at 10:17 a.m. Friday. "The child has been transported to the hospital and has been receiving care". Initial accounts over emergency audio indicated that the child wasn't breathing.
