Attorney Michael Avenatti faces new criminal charges in Calif.

Avenatti indicted on 36 charges of tax dodging perjury theft from clients

Thursday's indictment from a grand jury comes two weeks after federal prosecutors in Manhattan and Los Angeles charged Avenatti, who became a household name during his representation of adult-film actress Stephanie Clifford, known professionally as Stormy Daniels, almost simultaneously in two criminal cases, unsealing complaints that alleged he attempted to extort more than $20 million from sportswear company Nike and that he committed wire and bank fraud.

Avenatti now faces additional charges including wire fraud, tax violations and lying under oath in a bankruptcy case, as well as claims involving several clients whose settlements he allegedly embezzled after deploying a web of lies.

Avenatti also involved himself in the investigation of sexual abuse charges against R&B singer R. Kelly by giving the Chicago state's attorney's office what he said was a tape of the performer having sex with an underage girl. The Los Angeles Times reported that Johnson is the paraplegic man whom he allegedly withheld the multimillion-dollar settlement from. Johnson won a $4 million settlement from Los Angeles County, but Avenatti hid the money from him for years.

On the day of his arrest, federal agents executed search warrants at Avenatti's Century City apartment, his Echo Park law office and the Yorba Linda home of Judy Regnier, the office manager at Eagan Avenatti, according to the US attorney's office.

When the IRS started garnishing the company's bank accounts, the indictment says, Avenatti ordered employees to deposit the stores' cash and credit-card receipts in new accounts under a new company name.

Avenatti tweeted that he will plead not guilty and fight the charges. "I am entitled to a FULL presumption of innocence and am confident that justice will be done once ALL of the facts are known", he added.

"I look forward to the entire truth being known as opposed to a one-sided version meant to sideline me", Avenatti, who is free on a $300,000 bond, wrote on Twitter on Thursday. Instead, according to the indictment, Avenatti gave his client periodic "advances" of no more than $1,900 and paid the rent for his assisted living facility.

Avenatti was also charged with submitting phony tax returns to get more than $4 million in loans from The Peoples Bank in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 2014. The aircraft was seized Wednesday, authorities said.

He was also charged with 19 tax counts, including lying to an Internal Revenue Service officer, not paying personal income taxes since 2010, failing to pay taxes for his businesses, including two law firms, and pocketing payroll taxes from the Tully's Coffee chain that he owned, the indictment said.

In New York, Avenatti was accused of extorting Nike.

Daniels, who replaced Avenatti as her lawyer last month, has said she was "saddened but not shocked" by his arrest. Avenatti continued to lie to his client through last month, according to the indictment. But when Johnson was in escrow to purchase the property, Avenatti falsely said he had not received the settlement funds, the indictment said.
