After "Parivar Bhakti" Taunt, PM Modi Offers Salve To Amarinder Singh

UK's Labour Party Wants'Unequivocal Apology For Jallianwala Bagh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi were among the leaders who paid tribute to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on its 100 anniversary on Saturday.

He condemned Modi for allegedly trying to mislead the people with this "politically motivated falsehoods" and claimed the PM had insulted the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh, "first by not being present at any of the commemorative events and then by choosing to politicise the occasion".

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, as it is known in India, saw British troops fire on thousands of unarmed people in the northern city of Amritsar.

There have been calls for Britain to apologise for the massacre. Nevertheless, ahead of the ceremony this year, British Prime Minister Theresa May stopped shy of apologising, saying, "We deeply regret what happened and the suffering caused".

Terming the Jallianwala Bagh as a tragedy that created a new consciousness in an India grappling with pulling the British down, Khattar lamented that, in the present times, nationalism seemed in short supply.

Mr. Dominic Asquith, who visited the memorial to pay homage to those killed in Jallianwala Bagh, wrote "The events of Jallianwala Bagh 100 years ago today reflect a shameful act in British-Indian history". India's main opposition Congress party president Rahul Gandhi and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh visited the memorial at Jallianwala Bagh and paid homage to those killed in the massacre. As her Majesty, the Queen said before visiting Jallianwala Bagh 1997, it is a distressing example of our past history with India. "You might want to rewrite history, but you can't", he said.

In another tweet, she said: "Pb CM @capt_amarinder took @RahulGandhi to Sri Akal Takht Sahib but lacked courage to ask him to admit the @INCIndia's sin of demolishing Sikhs' highest religio-temporal seat with tanks & mortars". Others jumped into an open well at the site as the troops fired.

The Indian Express this past week shared eyewitness accounts compiled by two historians.

Punjab cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu also accompanied them, as the leaders were joined by a large number of people to commemorate the tragic incident that took place on the day of "Baisakhi" 100 years ago.

"Heaps of dead bodies lay there, some on their backs and some with their faces upturned".

"We must never forget what happened here".

Dyer, dubbed "the butcher of Amritsar", reportedly said later it was a necessary measure, and that the firing was "not to disperse the meeting but to punish the Indians for disobedience".
