8 magnitude quake measured in Indonesia

The quake struck east of Indonesia's Sulawesi Island at a depth of 17 kilometres

Hapsah Abdul Madjid, who lives in Luwuk city in Banggai district, Central Sulawesi, where the tremor was felt strongly, said people fled to higher ground and the electricity was cut, adding that residents panicked as fears soared over an imminent tsunami.

In the Palu tragedy in September, high waves hit the shore after the tsunami warning had been lifted.

After conducting some analyses, the BMKG revised the scale of the major natural disaster which jolted C. Sulawesi on 18:40 WIB from 6.9 magnitude to 6.8 magnitude.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, which was centred at a depth of 17 kilometres, had a magnitude of 6.8.

Indonesia issued a tsunami warning on Friday, urging people to evacuate to higher ground after an quake of magnitude 6.8 struck off the coast of its island of Sulawesi.

The USGS also notes that there are no "tsunami warnings, advisories, watches or threats", although they do not issue warnings for Indonesia.

Reuters reported citing a spokesperson for Indonesia's Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics that the country had issued a tsunami alert and ordered partial evacuation after the quake.

More than 2,000 people were killed. However, USGS warned that considerable damage was possible if the building is poor or badly constructed.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire".

Indonesia suffered its highest death toll in natural disasters in more than a decade a year ago, following two major tsunamis and several earthquakes.

A 7.5-magnitude quake that hit the opposite side of Sulawesi past year, triggering a tsunami, killed more than 4,000 people and devastated the city of Palu.
