Web inventor calls for 'fight' to protect internet on its 30th birthday

English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web delivers a speech during an event at the CERN in Meyrin near Geneva Switzerland

CERN, the European Organizations for Nuclear Research, will welcome Berners-Lee to speak about his new venture with the World Wide Web Foundation on Tuesday.

"Thank goodness it wasn't "Exciting but vague", Berners-Lee said. It was envisioned as a way of sharing information between scientists, academics and institutes.

Acknowledging the ways in which the web can become a breeding ground for malicious intent, Berners-Lee emphasized the need to "come together as a global web community", calling for companies, governments and individuals to do more. However, he thinks that doesn't mean things can't change, and it definitely doesn't mean we should all just give up on the web because of where it is today. "But if we dream a little and work a lot, we can get the web we want", he added in the blog post. "Against the backdrop of news stories about how the web is misused, it's understandable that many people feel afraid and unsure if the web is really a force for good", Berners-Lee writes sat the World Wide Web Foundation website.

How to save the Internet

The Contract, which has been backed by companies like Google, Microsoft and Facebook, outlines a set of principles to which governments, companies and citizens should commit to, including free, affordable access to the internet and respect for consumers' privacy and personal data. "But given how much the web has changed in the past 30 years, it would be defeatist and unimaginative to assume that the web as we know it can't be changed for the better in the next 30".

If you're looking for a more interactive way to celebrate the start of the web's 30th, CERN rebuilt the original WorldWideWeb browser developed on an Apple NeXT computer in 1990. "We will have failed the web", the technologist wrote this week. Speaking to reporters this week, Berners-Lee said recent scandals, had left a negative impact on users.
