Vietnamese woman in Kim murder case loses bid for release

An emotional Doan Thi Huong is escorted by police as she leaves the Shah Alam court

Doan and Siti Aisyah, as well as four others still at large, were accused of Jong-nam's murder at the departure hall of the KL International Airport 2 (klia2) on Feb 13, 2017.

Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong broke down in tears as a prosecutor declared her trial in Malaysia would continue.

In a separate statement on Wednesday, the government said Justice Minister Le Thanh Long had sent a letter to Malaysia's attorney-general, Tommy Thomas, asking Malaysia to free Huong.

Prosecutor Iskandar Ahmad gave no explanation for the refusal to drop the murder charge against Doan Thi Huong, who is the only suspect in custody after the stunning decision Monday to drop the case against Indonesian Siti Aisyah.

Both women were facing murder charges over the death of Kim Jong-nam.

Minh said in the phone conversation that senior leaders and the people of Vietnam had paid close attention to the trial, the government statement said.

In one, a woman identified as Huong puts her hands on Kim's face, while a blurry image shows someone the prosecution identified as Siti Aisyah hurrying away.

"Like I said, it's his prerogative", George told Malay Mail in a joint interview with Sin Chew Daily here yesterday at the end of his two-year term as Malaysian Bar president.

Their lawyers presented them as scapegoats and said the real killers were four North Koreans, who were suspected of being the masterminds behind the plot but fled Malaysia shortly after the assassination.

But Huong says she was duped by North Korean spies into approaching him, believing it was a harmless prank for a TV show.

Huong's stepmother Nguyen Thi Vy was so hopeful her stepdaughter would be back Thursday she bought extra cassava at the market for a celebration meal with the media that had gathered at her home since early Thursday.

Malaysian prosecutors withdrew murder charge against Aisyah over the death of the victim.

She was crushed when she did not get the good news she was hoping for.

He added that the request was also in part to allow the Vietnamese and Malaysian government to discuss Huong's case and an appeal by Vietnamese side to have the charges dropped.

Another lawyer for Huong urged Malaysia's attorney-general to explain why he dropped the case against Aisyah but not Huong.

Both women insist they are innocent.

Analysts have said the case against Aisyah appeared weaker since there was no video evidence of her accosting Kim at the airport. The North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur was defaced with graffiti just hours before the trial was to resume. They were then seen meeting a North Korean Embassy official and an Air Koryo official before flying out of the country.
