Verizon Discloses Pricing for Its First 5G Mobile Service

The 5G Moto Mod only works with the Moto z3, and will available exclusively to Verizon customers in the U.S.

To start the Moto Z3 with a 5G Moto Mod attached is the only device that can connect to Verizon's 5G network.

Good news, Verizon, the exclusive 5G carrier of the Moto Z3, is opening pre-orders at a much more reasonable $50 (about £38, AU$70), and 5G plans start at an extra $10 a month. Verizon has not said exactly how fast the 5G mobile service will be at launch. As long as you have one of Verizon's unlimited plans (Go, Beyond, or Above Unlimited), you can pay $10/mo and get access to 5G. That fee will be waived for the first three months, which is nice, but if you were expecting Verizon to offer 5G service at no extra cost, this is probably some sour news.

First, the 5G network's only launching in Chicago and Minneapolis on April 11. Even Verizon is using that careful language (it's also the exclusive U.S. carrier for Samsung's 5G phone for a limited time). Buying the $85 plan lets a customer use at least 22GB a month before facing possible slowdowns, while the $95 plan comes with 75GB before possible slowdowns. As someone not from Chicago, you'll have to tell me if that's a big area or not. Though 5G will be a hot topic this year, there's a lot we don't know yet. Verizon did say that they plan to "rapidly expand", though. The promise of "no data de-prioritization" also applies only to the Moto Mod and early launch cities. Of course, you'll need a compatible phone and there are none at this point.

Verizon said 5G service in Chicago will be available in the Loop, the Magnificent Mile, Gold Coast, River North, and Old Town. For Minneapolis, you are looking at 5G in Downtown West, Downtown East, and Elliot Park.

Come April 11, customers in the first two 5G Ultra Wideband mobility cities will be able to experience all the benefits of this "true" next-gen network, including "ultra-fast wireless speeds" enabling movie downloads and streaming "in seconds", as well as "ultra-low latency" allowing "business customers to video conference and collaborate remotely in near real time".
