Trump’s ex-communications director Hope Hicks to share docs with House Democrats

Top Democrat Rips Trump White House For 'Stonewalling' Congressional Probes

Hope Hicks, the former White House communications director and long-time confidante of President Donald Trump, plans to turn over documents to the House Judiciary Committee as part of its investigation into potential obstruction of justice.

"The White House and the executive branch generally has been stonewalling", Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said Monday on MSNBC.

Let me underscore that point: The White House has not turned over a single piece of paper to our committee or made a single official available for testimony during the 116th Congress. At the top of the list, Cummings wrote, are questions surrounding White House security clearances, particularly whether proper protocols were followed when top-secret clearances were granted to the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner and former national security advisor Michael Flynn.

Trump is yet to comment on the reports of Hicks' willingness to turn over the documents requested by the judiciary committee.

Democratic investigators singled out any documents relating to the infamous Trump Tower meeting between Trump 2016 campaign officials, Trump family members and a Russian lawyer in June 2016-as well as the alleged drafting of a misleading statement about the involvement of Trump's oldest son Donald Trump Jr. Instead, it let us read 30 pages, about half of which were already public or entirely blacked out. Cummings said President George W. Bush's administration provided the oversight committee with numerous documents and witnesses during the investigations into issues including US Army soldier Pat Tillman's death and the handling of the Hurricane Katrina aftermath.

By contrast, the complete refusal by the Trump White House to produce any documents or witnesses to the primary investigative committee in the House reflects a decision at the highest levels to deny congressional oversight altogether. "President Trump's actions violate our Constitution's fundamental principle of checks and balances".

In a statement issued as Monday's deadline for document submissions expired, the House of Representatives committee said it has heard from "a large number" of those who received document requests on March 4 and that many have either sent or agreed to send documents to the committee.

The probe, which Republicans have denounced as an overreach of congressional authority, is aimed at determining whether Trump has used his office to enrich himself or has sought to obstruct investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and any collusion by his campaign.
