Trump issues veto over border emergency declaration

Trump Likely To Veto US Lawmakers Measure Against Border Wall Report

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks while meeting with Ireland's Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Leo Varadkar in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, U.S., March 14, 2019.

President Trump issued the first veto of his presidency, striking down a resolution that would have terminated his national emergency declaration diverting funding to build the wall.

Trump originally declared a national emergency on the border last month after Congress granted only a fraction of the $5.7 billion he requested for a wall on the border. Trump has attempted to coax Republicans into voting his way on the issue and painted those who vote against him as standing with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and for crime and open borders.

The Senate voted Thursday by a margin of 59 to 41 to block Trump's declaration that an emergency on the border with Mexico requires the construction of a wall, a project for which Congress has not appropriated money.

Lee, meanwhile, had introduced a bill that would end future emergency declarations after 30 days, in an effort to allow Republicans to vote against the resolution.

White House spokeswoman Mercedes Schlapp would not say when the veto would happen, but told reporters Friday Trump is "doing what he believes is his constitutional duty, which is to protect the American people".

Republican senators who bucked the president said they did so to preserve congressional control over the government's purse strings.

Trump's reelection campaign began fundraising off the veto early Friday afternoon, sending out an email asking supporters to donate to a "Official Wall Defense Fund".

"We tried to cut a deal", Lee said.

The president has said he wants a wall to prevent immigrants from crossing into the United States illegally.

Attorney General William Barr is also at the President's veto event.

While the original passage marked a stinging rebuke from members of Trump's own party, his veto is likely the last word as lawmakers are unlikely to muster the two-thirds majority required to override.
