Trump expected to seek $8.6 billion for border wall in new budget

As budget deficit balloons few in Washington seem to care

Responding to the deficit, Kudlow said that good growth policies don't necessarily have to "obsess" over it.

President Donald Trump will seek $8.6 billion in his new budget to build the U.S. -Mexico border wall, two administration officials said Sunday, setting up another showdown with Congress, which has resisted giving him more money for his signature campaign promise.

One senior administration official told The Washington Post the $8.6 billion in the budget request, combined with the funds Trump wants to redirect with through his national emergency declaration, would allow the White House to complete at least 722 miles of new barriers, which has been Trump's goal.

Democrats, who oppose the wall as unnecessary and immoral, control the U.S. House of Representatives, making it unlikely the Republican president's request will win congressional passage.

"Congress refused to fund his wall and he was forced to admit defeat and reopen the government". He will request another $3.6 billion for the Department of Defense's military construction budget to erect more sections of a wall.

Trump in December demanded $5.7 billion to help fund massive wall construction along the U.S. -Mexico border. The budget proposal will also include another $3.6 million in military construction funding to make up for any projects delayed by the wall, officials said.

The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss budget details before Monday's release of the plan and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Asked whether Trump's new border funding request signals that a new budget fight is coming, White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow responded, "I suppose there will be". "Finish the wall" is already a feature of his re-election campaign, a rallying cry plastered across banners and signs at his campaign rallies.

"We have provided the course of action, the strategy and the request to finish the job".

The budget proposal includes a plan to hire more than 2,800 law enforcement and support personnel for the agencies, and 100 immigration judge teams, officials said. Trump took that step after Congress approved almost $1.4 billion for border barriers, far less than the $5.7 billion he wanted.

Funding legislation needs to be passed before 1 October or the government could shut down again.

The Treasury Department recently reported that the federal government ran a $310 billion budget deficit for the first four months of fiscal 2019 - a 77 percent increase from a year earlier.

Several Republican senators took issue with how the president made his move, arguing Trump violated the line that separated the powers of the executive and legislative branches when he declared a national emergency. Trump is expected to veto the resolution. "And the longer they delay, the more threatening it will be to the economy, the more likely we are to slide into some sort of confrontation that results in a government shutdown".
