Theresa May: Changes mean Brexit backstop 'cannot become permanent arrangement'

David Davis Warns Britain Will Get Its Own'Trump Moment If MPs Vote To Delay

British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to reveal Monday (11 March) what changes, if any, she has secured to her European Union divorce deal, on the eve of a crucial vote in parliament less than three weeks before Brexit day.

The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, has hinted that the United Kingdom should consider staying in the European Union after Prime Minister May's Conservative government experienced a calamitous defeat in the House of Commons on her Brexit deal last night (15 January).

But the details of it were a sticking point for many MPs when they voted her deal down in January.

A rump of Brexiteers will require public assurance from the attorney general, who's said to be agonising, that the update to the European Union divorce deal has real meaning - and is not just a rickety set of steps to climb down.

With dozens of ministers and several Cabinet members threatening to resign, Theresa May conceded to that meaningful vote, as well as two further votes on ruling out no deal and extending Article 50.

European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier said the talks happening now were between British politicians, rather than between the United Kingdom and Brussels. It honours the UK's solemn commitments in the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.

"The deal that MP's voted on in January was not strong enough in making that clear and legally-binding changes were needed to set that right".

If that fails to secure the necessary number of votes, a second motion on whether to extend Article 50 - essentially movie the date Britain will leave the European Union - could be tabled. She survived a bid to oust her through a no-confidence vote in December, so can't be forced from office for a year.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May arrives to attend a church service near her Maidenhead constituency, in England, Sunday March 10, 2019.

Mrs May has been told by Brexiteers that rejection of the Withdrawal Agreement is "inevitable" unless there are significant changes to the Irish border backstop.

He added: "I think a meaningful vote with an addendum saying this House will support a deal if such and such is done might be a way of uniting the party or limiting the scale of the defeat".

A fresh round of European Parliament elections will take place across Europe on May 23, with the new MEPs due to be sworn in on July 1.

Former chief whip Andrew Mitchell told the Times of London that "anything that avoids what looks like a massive defeat on Tuesday is worth considering".

Senior Labour backbencher Yvette Cooper said the PM would be guilty of a "straight-up lie" if she failed to go through with votes allowing MPs to delay Brexit.

In an article for the Daily Mail, he said: "I hope that everyone who believes in our democracy - in the importance of delivering Brexit, but also in the critical need to unite our country - will come behind the Prime Minister's deal this week".
