Singapore, Hong Kong, and Paris Tied as the World's Most Expensive Cities

3 Indian Cities Among Cheapest To Live In Says Cost Of Living Survey

Some of India's biggest cities are among the cheapest in the world to live in, according to findings of the Worldwide Cost of Living Survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

The annual index compares the cost of goods and services, including food, transport and rent in 133 cities around the world.

Dublin has ranked 19th in the list of the world's most expensive cities. Meanwhile, cities like Seoul and Copenhagen is at the same level with NY and shared the same seventh place.

But even the priciest cities haven't been immune to a slowdown in the housing market.

The most expensive cities in the world have been revealed - and the No. 1 spot belongs not to one singly city, but to three destinations.

"The cost of living in Istanbul, for example, might seem to have decreased, but since household expenses have increased, this has no positive reflection on the daily life of Istanbulites", said Cansiz, director at WRI's Turkey Sustainable Cities programme.

Paris - where the high cost of living has been one of the factors behind weeks of violent protests by Yellow Vest demonstrators - has ranked among the top 10 most expensive cities since 2003, with only transport and alcohol offering value for money compared to other European cities.

However, Copenhagen's high ranking, joint seventh (along with Seoul), was thought to be due to relatively high transportation, recreation and personal care costs. It jumped 12 spots from past year, coming in as the 25th most expensive city worldwide.

"We note converging costs in traditionally more expensive cities like Paris, Singapore, Zurich, Geneva, Copenhagen and Hong Kong".

The world's cheapest cities include Caracas (Venezuela), Damascus (Syria), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Almaty (Kazakhstan), Karachi (Pakistan), Lagos (Nigeria), Buenos Aires (Argentina) as well as Bengaluru, Chennai and Delhi.

Osaka, Japan, tied for fifth place with Geneva, Switzerland.
