Shocking autopsy photos show toll of plastic waste on dead whale

According to the New York Times, 88 pounds of plastic was found inside the dead whale's body when it was uncovered on Friday.

Graphic autopsy images have revealed the bad toll that plastic waste took on a young whale found dead in the Philippines.

Marine biologist Darrell Blatchley, said that in the 10 years they have examined dead whales and dolphins, 57 of them were found to have died due to accumulated rubbish and plastic in their stomachs.

"It is unimaginable how many more animals are mistaking and ingesting plastic for food right now, and how many more of them will be found beached and dead soon".

The locals quickly called environmental officials, who arrived at noon, when the whale had already died.

"I was not prepared for the amount of plastic".

Biologist Darrell Blatchley had the gruesome task of extracting the shopping bags and rice sacks that left the stricken 15ft Cuvier's beaked whale vomiting blood in the last moments of its life.

A necropsy was performed on the whale and BFAR 11 collected tissue samples for scientific determination of other possible causes of death through a series of histopathologic tests. "Sixteen rice sacks in total".

According to a report published in Science Magazine in 2015, 275 million metric tons of plastic waste was generated in 192 coastal countries in 2010, with 4.8 to 12.7 million metric tons entering the ocean.

The whale's cause of death was 40kg of plastic bags. Cetaceans - marine mammals including whales, dolphins and porpoises - do not drink ocean water but absorb fresh water through their food, he explained.

The Philippines has been deemed one of the "world's leading plastic polluters".

Abigail Aguilar, campaigner for Greenpeace Southeast Asia - Philippines, said today: "The frequency on which marine animals are dying due to plastic ingestion is alarming".

The Cuvier's beaked whale isn't listed as endangered or threatened, but its species profile on the Department of the Environment and Energy's website has noted the increased threat of plastic pollution.
