The stock had its highest daily trading volume since July 2013 and ended well off its session low of $365.55, but it kept a lid on the Dow, which managed only about half the gains of the S&P 500.

Boeing weighed down the Dow Jones Industrial Average for a second day as shares in the aircraft maker fell amid safety concerns following another deadly crash involving its most popular plane.

Aside from Boeing and engine-maker United Technologies (NYSE:), most other stocks were higher after data showed a solid rebound in in January. sales fell even more sharply than first thought in December, which is normally the most important month in the year.

At 10.56am ET the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 18.67 points, or 0.07%, at 25,632.21, the S&P 500 was up 12.29 points, or 0.44%, at 2,795.59 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 36.20 points, or 0.48%, at 7,594.27.

The S&P 500 index gained 8.22 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 2,791.52.

April West Texas Intermediate crude rose 8 cents, or 0.1%, to settle at $56.87 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Tuesday after trading as high as $57.55. The Nasdaq rose 69 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 7,660. The rally in the communications giant and Dow component helped offset some of Boeing's losses. The Nasdaq rose 16 points, or 0.2 percent, to 7,576.

Apple is up 3.2 per cent after an analyst upgraded the stock, while Nvidia is gaining 4.7 per cent after announcing an acquisition.

March 12 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks rose on Tuesday after tame inflation data supported the Federal Reserve's dovish stance on future rate hikes, but Boeing's fall for a second straight day in a row pressured the Dow.

Monday's U.S. Retail Sales report offered mixed results.

The S&P 500 index rose 11 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,795.

The bank's market value rose by $14 billion, which sounds impressive except for this fact: Apple, a much larger company, saw its market value rise by $24 billion, yet it accounted for less than 1% of the rise in the Dow because the price of its stock didn't change much.

The Dow is up 104.42 points, or 0.4 per cent. Fifth Third Bancorp rose 1.3 percent.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.63 percent.
