Rocket Sirens Wail in Tel Aviv Amid Reports of Explosion

Air Raid Warning Sirens Go Off In Tel Aviv After Apparent Gaza Rocket Attack

After air raid sirens howled throughout Tel Aviv and surrounding towns, Reuters journalists heard several explosions in Israel's coastal conurbation.

The newspaper said the Iron Dome defense system was activated and intercepted the missiles. It said there were no reports of casualties or damage.

Following the rocket fire, Hamas evacuated all its headquarters in the Gaza Strip in anticipation of a possible retaliation by Israeli military. Israeli media said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was convening senior military and security officers to evaluate the situation. So did Hamas, apparently, with a group's official telling Israeli media that Hamas is "not interested in an escalation" and does not know who fired the two rockets.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility in the enclave, where its dominant Hamas group has been engaged in talks with Egypt on a long-term ceasefire with Israel.

Rocket sirens wailed in the densely populated Mediterranean city on Thursday evening, alerting residents to rush to bomb shelters.

A statement by the Hamas armed wing said it was "not responsible for the firing of the rockets tonight towards the enemy".

Earlier on Thursday, Hamas security forces in Gaza violently dispersed hundreds of Palestinians protesting against dire living conditions.

Tensions between the Israelis and the Palestinians near the fence separating Gaza from Israel have been mounting since last March, which marked the beginning of the Great March of Return.
