Raonic makes quick work of Kecmanovic at Paribas Open

Milos Raonic of Canada celebrating a point against Miomir Kecmanovic at Indian Wells in USA

Canada's Milos Raonic is heading to the semifinals at the BNP Paribas Open.

Canadian Milos Raonic made sure Miomir Kecmanovic's luck ran out on Thursday, beating the 19-year-old Serbian 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Indian Wells Masters.

Raonic, the No. 13 seed from Thornhill, Ont., fired 13 aces against no double faults in putting away Kecmanovic in 72 minutes on a sunny, windy and cool day in the Southern California desert.

He'll face either eighth-ranked Austrian Dominic Thiem or France's world number 19 Gael Monfils for a place in the final.

Meanwhile, resurgent Swiss Belinda Bencic toppled another top-10 player on Thursday, downing fifth-ranked Karolina Pliskova to set up an Indian Wells WTA semi-final against Angelique Kerber.

From 4-2 down, the World No.8 ran off the last four games of a high-quality opener which saw almost 20 winners combined between the two players, and Kerber broke the No.23 seed for the third time from 30-0 down in the set's last game.

Just as he was playing lights-out tennis, Gaël Monfils's body let him down again. Until Kerber stopped her, Williams had won four matches in a row for the first time since previous year in the desert.

"She changed the rhythm a little bit", Kerber said. Bencic hopes to make her second final appearance of the year and her ninth final appearance of her career.

Kerber dominated the tiebreaker to grab a hard-fought first set that featured four breaks of serve. I'm just trying to play. This is Kerber's third semi-final in Indian Wells, coming almost six years after her last appearance (in 2013, lost to Caroline Wozniacki).

Kerber has won the last three meetings against Bencic, and all six matches overall have been decided in six straight sets.

Pliskova raced to 4-1 lead before wrapping up the second set. She won her third career title at Dubai last month and her first since 2015. In the third, she overcame a break point to hold at 2-all but only won one more game the rest of the way. The players then exchanged breaks before Andreescu won two games in a row to go up 5-3.

"We are the one who is closest in our lives, so you can be really straightforward", Latisha Chan said.
