Speaking in Abuja, Nigeria, the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, welcomed the news that there are fewer people living with HIV in the country than previously estimated and launched the Revised National HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework 2019-2021, which will guide the country's future response to the epidemic.

"For the first time, the end of AIDs as a public threat by 2030 is truly in sight for our country".

"Now that we have data that will help us target for impact, I urge all us not to relent in this fight, but to increase the momentum in a concerted effort to end the epidemic ahead of 2030. Let us work collectively and push for the last mile".

Mrs. Buhari thanked UNAIDS for extending the tenure of her appointment as UNAIDS Special Ambassador for the Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV in Nigeria and the Promotion of Treatment for Children Living with HIV by another two years. Among children aged 0-14 years, HIV prevalence according to the new data is 0.2%.

"The Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey represents an extraordinary example of what can be achieved by working together", Young said adding that, "the USA government looks forward to increased government of Nigeria ownership and investment in the HIV response to ensure sustainability".

The President said he was excited that the rate of Persons Living with the scourge has dropped to 1.9m.

The survey presented for each geopolitical zone in the country for prevalence among persons age 15-64 years reads: North Central 2.1 per cent; North East 1.1 per cent; North West 0.6 per cent; South East 1.9 per cent; South-South 3.1 per cent, and South West 1.2 per cent.

"This survey is good news, because it is showing clearly that we have less people infected with HIV, less cases of new infection and less death due to HIV".
