Positive Person Donates a Kidney for the First Time Ever

Johns Hopkins Medicine

But stigma still remains. This federal law allowed organ transplants between people with HIV in clinical trials. "And I can't figure out any better way to show that people like me can bring life".

The surgeons at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore performed the operation on Monday, calling it the first in the world of its kind.

Recently, surgeons in Baltimore have carried out the world's first kidney transplant from a living donor with HIV, an achievement for patients with the AIDS virus who require a new organ.

The kidney of a 35-year-old HIV-positive woman has been transplanted into another patient with the AIDS virus, U.S. surgeons announced Thursday, in a major medical breakthrough.

An estimated 1.1 million people in the USA have HIV and over 113,000 people are on the waiting list for organ transplants. Newer HIV medications are safer and more effective, however, making an HIV-positive person with no complications on par with an HIV-negative live kidney donor, Segev told the AP.

People living with HIV haven't been able to donate kidneys until now, because there were worries that HIV was too much of a risk factor for kidney disease in the donor. Those with well-controlled HIV, who don't have a history of diabetes, uncontrolled high blood pressure or protein in their urine could be healthy enough to donate.

Nina Martinez of Atlanta traversed to John Hopkins University to give a kidney to a stranger who was HIV positive.

"And the fact that 30 years ago, a disease that was basically a death sentence has been so transformed, that today somebody with HIV can save somebody else's life".

A team of doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital changed the game.

The kidney was implanted near the recipient's pelvis through a six-to-eight inch incision in the abdomen, and the recipient's kidneys were not removed, as is common practice, Desai said.

Dr Durand said about 10,000 HIV-positive patients are now suffering kidney failure and are on dialysis. After that period, the current recipient would require another transplant or go back on dialysis, he said. The recipient will keep both of their own kidneys, which is standard procedure. This innovation was made possible by Segev's conception of and advocacy for the 2013 federal HIV Organ Policy Equity Act (the HOPE Act). "Maybe people living with HIV will see this as a breakthrough".

Martinez is in near-normal physical health. "Her health is excellent". The donor is under post operative care, her HIV is well controlled and her immune system is stable.

Johns Hopkins Medicine was the first to perform the initial HIV-to-HIV transplant from a deceased donor in the U.S.in 2016.

In 1983, Martinez and her twin sister were born 12 weeks prematurely in San Jose and soon developed anemia. When a housemate found out she had HIV, he moved out, leaving his belongings behind. "Because those people need a mental reboot".

It took about nine months of testing to verify Martinez was healthy enough for donation.

She was inspired to donate her kidney by an episode of "Grey's Anatomy", she said, adding that she was excited to be part of a medical first. "It was my turn to do this, for both my friend that I cared about and all people waiting on a transplant". If HIV donors could themselves approach for transplantation it will make space in the transplant waiting list for everybody. It's not counted how many of these people are living with HIV, but with live donors like Martinez, more people on the waiting list could receive the help they need.
