Police file dowry, sexual harassment charges against Indian cricketer Shami

Mohammed Shami has been charged under non-bailable sections by Kolkata Police

In a major trouble for Indian pacer Mohammed Shami ahead of the 2019 World Cup, a chargesheet has been filed against Shami under IPC 498A (dowry harassment) and 354A (sexual harassment) on Thursday.

"The chargesheet has been filed against Shami under IPC 498 A (for mental and physical torture, and dowry harassment) and 354 A (for sexual harassment and assault)", Dip Narayan Pakrashi, public prosecutor in the eastern city of Kolkata, told AFP. However, in some temporary relief to the cricketer, the police dropped the more serious charges that were registered in the FIR including sections 307 (attempt to murder), and 376 (punishment for rape) besides criminal intimidation.

"Police submitted chargesheet today". Police recorded the statement of 28 people before filling the chargesheet in the case.

The chargesheet was filed against the fast bowler almost a year after his wife Hasin Jahan lodged a police complaint, levelling multiple charges against Shami and four of his family members. Shami responded by saying that the accusations leveled by Hasin against him were a part of a conspiracy to ruin his career.

Shami's wife Hasin Jahan had accused the cricketer of sexual offenses and domestic violence in March past year after exposing his alleged extra-marital affair in public. The BCCI later reinstated his central contract.

Shami has dismissed all the accusations as a campaign to defame him.

Shami last played in the just-concluded One Day International series against Australia, where he picked five wickets in four matches.
