No trophy, no regrets as Federer departs Indian Wells for Miami

Dominic Thiem beats Roger Federer to win Indian Wells Masters

Federer was gracious in defeat after falling in the final in the desert for a second consecutive year. A year ago he did not convert three championship point against Juan Martin Del Potro.

Austria's Dominic Thiem stunned Switzerland's Roger Federer coming from a set down to win in three and claim the BNP Paribas Open title in Indian Wells. 'I came from a really bad form in all categories, and now I'm the champion of Indian Wells.

But he rallied for a third career win over Federer in five meetings, his first over the Swiss on hard courts.

Austrian Thiem, who was also briefly ranked fourth in the world in late 2017, rose four places after beating Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday to deny the Swiss star a record sixth Indian Wells crown.

After another fantastic season he had in 2005 (81-4 score with 11 ATP titles), Roger Federer was ready to rumble in 2006 as well, winning titles in Doha and at the Australian Open before losing to Rafael Nadal in the final of Dubai.

Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu stunned eighth-seeded Angelique Kerber 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to win the BNP Paribas Open and capture her first career title. The 20 time Grand Slam victor says tennis is bigger than any individual, so Roger Federer does not consider himself to be bigger than tennis. "I have a great team and a wonderful family around, so I try to stay on tour as long as possible but I need success to feel my motivation and at the moment it's all working very well", he added.

Roger had a good draw in Miami where after his 1st round bye, he should play Matthew Ebden in the 2nd round.

"I enjoyed every second of it".

"I think Stan knows that he is very close and it's just a matter of time until he is going to break through again", said Federer after their most recent clash at Indian Wells.

After a tight opening set, Federer took charge and marched towards the finish line in sets two and three, hitting more winners and fewer number of unforced errors, also forcing a lot of mistakes with his sharp and aggressive groundstrokes. "It's a massive event to win", Federer said. I was in the points, he said. (I) just came up against somebody who was on the day a bit better when it really mattered.
