NK Embassy in Spain attackers linked to Central Intelligence Agency

Report CIA linked to attack

Two people identified in connection with a break-in at the North Korean embassy in Madrid have links to the USA intelligence agency CIA, Spanish media claims.

The paper said the Spanish authorities had raised the matter with the Central Intelligence Agency, which had denied involvement "but not in a very convincing manner".

El Pais said that sources believe the attack was meant to get information on former North Korean Ambassador to Spain Kim Hyok-chol, who negotiated nuclear disarmament plans with US special envoy Stephen Biegun ahead of the US-North Korea summit in Hanoi on February 27-28.

According to El Pais, Spain asked for clarification from the CIA but the USA spy agency denied any involvement.

According to reporting from the BBC, ten masked men broke into the embassy in the middle of the afternoon and took at least eight staffers hostage.

Spanish investigators are probing an alleged attack on the North Korean embassy in Madrid.

One woman managed to get free, escaping through a second floor window and screaming for help.

El Confidencial said a police officer dispatched to the embassy was told everything was fine by a man who answered the door, but moments later, "the gates swung open ... and two high-end cars came out at great speed, leaving the area within seconds". They tied up the eight people inside and put bags on their heads. The cars used for the getaway belonged to the diplomatic mission and were later abandoned in a nearby street. Several diplomats required medical attention after the incident due to minor injuries.

"The operation was perfectly planned as if it were carried out by a military cell", they said.

It suggested the intruders could have been looking for information relating to Kim's top negotiator, Kim Hyok Chol, who served as ambassador to Spain before being expelled in September 2017.

In February, Kim Hyok Chol also led the North Korean delegation that negotiated a nuclear disarmament plan with U.S. special envoy Stephen Biegun in exchange for sanctions to be lifted.

The incident took place just days before a key summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The nation's High Court, the Audiencia Nacional, will hear the investigation and could order the arrest of any identified assailants.

The talks failed to reach a nuclear accord.
