Nissan to end Sunderland production of luxury Infiniti brand

Nissan to end Sunderland production of luxury Infiniti brand

"The commercial reality for Infiniti in western Europe is that there is simply no visibility of a viable and sustainable business, especially given the regulatory challenges", he said.

The move comes as Infiniti seeks to divert its resources to markets with bigger opportunities, such as China and the United States, from a region where non-European premium brands are struggling to compete against local players such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The first step will be to end its Q30 and QX30 production lines in Sunderland, England, which will happen by the middle of this year. Infiniti also says it is working "to find alternative opportunities for any employees who would be affected, consulting with employee representatives where necessary and identifying opportunities for transition and training support where appropriate".

Nissan will cease production of its luxury Infiniti brand at its Sunderland factory by the summer, potentially putting jobs at risk.

About 250 staff could be affected by the move and Nissan intends to discuss the impact with those employees.

Infiniti pulled from Europe and production will end in the UK in July

Existing customers are being advised to head online and register details on the Infiniti website where they will be informed about the company's restructure and service and maintenance solutions going further.

It is unknown if the report of reduced operating hours is linked to the Infiniti decision.

A spokesman said that the targets could be met by Infiniti, like any other vehicle maker, with investment in electrified technology, but there was no viable way of the company to do so.

Unite's national officer Steve Bush said: "This decision, which is driven by poor sales, is obviously sad news".

Production will now shift to Japan as Nissan focuses on sales of the Infiniti Q30 in China and Eastern Europe.
