New Zealand's Prime Minister Bans 'Military Style' Weapons, Orders Mandatory Buybacks

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern speaks during a press conference following the March 15 mosque shooting in Christchurch New Zealand. Prime Minister Ardern says New Zealand is immediately banning assault rifles

Now, less than a week later, the New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden banned all military-style semi-automatic weapons.

After 26 people were killed at a USA elementary school in 2012, there were widespread calls for universal background checks. It also extends to accessories, such as bump stocks, used to convert guns into what the government called "military-style" weapons.

In the immediate aftermath of last Friday's shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, Ardern labelled the attack as terrorism and said New Zealand's gun laws would change.

"Christchurch happened, and within days New Zealand acted to get weapons of war out of the consumer market".

A semi-automatic firearm that is a shotgun and that is capable of being used in combination with a detachable magazine that is capable of holding more than 5 cartridges.

Debra Messing used an Instagram post to praise Prime Minister Ardern, saying, "THIS is what Leadership looks like".

Sanders, who was criticized by Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Democratic primaries for being too moderate on the issue of gun control, has in recent years embraced the Democratic establishment's insistence on banning assault rifles outright. "We must follow New Zealand's lead, take on the NRA and ban the sale and distribution of assault weapons in the United States", Sanders tweeted.

Christchurch will today mark a week since the city was hit by a terror attack that left 50 people dead.

The 28-year-old suspect bought the weapons "through a simple online purchase", she said, and "took a significant number of lives using primarily two guns".
