New ‘Orphan Black’ Series in Development at AMC

New ‘Orphan Black’ Series in Development at AMC (EXCLUSIVE)

A new series set in the Orphan Black universe is now in development at AMC, Variety has confirmed.

Orphan Black, which helped put BBC America on the original scripted series map as its first homegrown hit, aired for five seasons. Both the series and Maslany's performance were well-received by critics. Writers are now being sought for the project, with Temple Street intent on bringing in multiple scribes to pitch their own unique visions for the show. AMC did not comment on what that premise will be, but based on what the original BBC America show covered, it could be about the eugenics-experimenting Dyad Institute or their hyper-religious counterparts, the Proletheans.

Whether that means a completely new cast of characters rather than telling another story with Tatiana Maslany's Sarah Manning-or one of the many other clones she portrayed on the show (or even one we didn't get to meet) - remains to be seen. Maslany's awe-inspiring turn as the multiple clones created by the Dyad Institute carried the show, and elevated it from its cable sci-fi foundations. After the much-lovedOrphan Black ended in 2017, there was a large clone-thriller-sized hole left in genre fans' hearts.

Nothing solid is out there yet about Orphan Black's new spin-off, but check back here for updates.

There's also the question of why AMC is developing this series rather than BBC America, which aired the original in the US from 2013 to 2017.

Orphan Black debuted on BBC America in 2013, and while it was slightly underseen during its tenure on the cabler, the series picked up considerable steam after Amazon secured the streaming rights in advance of it second season.
