Mueller report should be made public, House says in bipartisan vote

House endorses making Mueller report public in unanimous 420-0 vote

"This report must see the light of day, must be available to the American public for a catharsis that will allow us to start with the facts, understand what happened and begin to rebuild the faith of the American people", Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) said, as The New York Times reports.

In an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote, the U.S. House of Representatives called Thursday for special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 election to be made public when it is completed.

As such, it is not clear if the Republican leader of the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, will put the resolution on the Senate floor for a vote. A bid by the Senate's top Democrat, Chuck Schumer, to have the resolution approved by voice vote after the House's action was thwarted by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.

"Congress will not accept any attempt by Mr Barr or the president to bury the report and the findings of the special counsel".

Mueller has been investigating since May 2017 whether Trump's campaign conspired with Moscow and whether the president has unlawfully tried to obstruct the probe.

The House passed the largely symbolic resolution Thursday morning as pressure mounts on the Justice Department to release Mueller's full report in a 420-0 vote. Will Hurd, R-Texas, a member of the Intelligence Committee and former CIA officer.

Trump has labeled Mueller's investigation a "witch hunt", maintaining that no collusion occurred between his 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

If a full report isn't released, House Democrats have made it clear they will do whatever they can to get hold of it. Nadler has said he would subpoena the final report and invite - or even subpoena - Mueller to talk about it. Four Republicans voted present, and eight members (five Democrats and three Republicans) didn't vote.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, introduced the measure, saying there is "overwhelming public interest" for the report to be widely distributed. He hasn't committed to publicizing the report, but said during his confirmation hearing that he wants "to provide as much transparency as I can consistent with the law".

Some Democrats have voiced concern that Barr could withhold evidence of possible misconduct by Trump, under Justice Department policies that oppose bringing criminal charges against a sitting president and discourage releasing explanations when a person has not been charged with a crime.

Several Republicans have also agreed that Mueller should release not simply the full report, but any and all investigative materials that informed it.
