Mozilla launches Firefox Send, a free, encrypted file-sharing service

Firefox Send lets you share 1GB files with no strings attached

All transfers handled through Send are fully encrypted and are performed by uploading your files to Send and sharing the download link with the appropriate recipients.

Firefox Send allows users to share files from any browser, using end-to-end encryption to secure the data. For example, you can choose when your file link expires, the number of downloads, and enable an optional password.

Firefox Send can handle files as large as 2.5GB. Send the link to the intended recipient any way you see fit, and their download of the files will begin when they either click on it or enter it in their browser.

You can set a limit to how many times the file can be downloaded before it is deleted from the servers: one, two, three, four, five, 20, 50, or 100 times.

And in a blog post announcing the service, Mozilla frames it as a service for privacy and security hawks, though few details were offered beyond the fact that the files are encrypted end to end. For those seeking extra privacy, shared files can also be locked with a passphrase.

Mozilla's offering is hardly innovative, but it's easy to use and feels less cumbersome than other services. 'With Send, your files self-destruct after download, so they can't be accessed by anyone else.

Firefox Send is touted as an ideal way to share files with co-workers, and thus take the strain of company internet servers.

Mozilla says that Firefox Send will also be available as an Android app in beta later this week.

"Mozilla receives an encrypted copy of the file you upload but we can not access the content or the name of your encrypted file", the organization explains in the service's Privacy Notice. There's never any guarantee that a Test Pilot will result in a final product launch, but Firefox Send has apparently proven popular enough to graduate to a full commercial release.
