Mafia boss shot dead outside home

The body of former mob boss John Gotti is carried from Papavero Funeral Home in the Queens borough of New York 15 June 2002

Paramedics transported Cali to Staten Island University North hospital after responding to the home at 9:17 p.m.

No description of a suspect is now available, and no arrests have been made, according to an NYPD spokesman.

Cali is the first reputed crime family boss to be shot since the execution of former Gambino head Paul Castellano in 1985.

The New York Times notes that Cali's murder came the same day Joseph Cammarano, thought to be the acting boss of the Bonanno crime family, was acquitted at trial.

The influence of the Gambinos waned in the 1990s after a number of members turned government informers and several leaders were imprisoned.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, who at the time was the United States Attorney for the Southern District of NY, condemned the killings and vowed to find those responsible.

Cali himself was jailed for 16 months for his connection to an extortion scheme surrounding an attempt to build a NASCAR track on Staten Island. The house is listed under the name of Rosaria Inzerillo.

Cali was the first NY crime family boss shot since 1985, when Paul Castellano, who owned a mansion on Todt Hill, was executed as he arrived at Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan.

An alleged mafia boss has been reportedly been shot and killed outside his home in NY.

According to local media, Cali ascended through the ranks, becoming a powerful capo of organised crime before turning 40 - less than 10 years after becoming an inducted member.

The Gambino crime family is one of what is widely referred to as "The Five Families" of Italian organized crime operations in New York City and other parts of the United States.

The New York Daily News reported in 2008 that Cali was among 62 people arrested on federal racketeering charges and he later pleaded guilty to conspiring to extort money.
