Losing Amazon second HQ deal was bad for New York

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez at a rally opposing Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court in October

That same Siena poll showed 38% of ny voters consider Ocasio-Cortez a "villain" (compared to 12% who consider her a hero) for her role in mobilizing opposition to Amazon's plan open a second headquarters in Long Island City, Queens - a neighborhood which abuts her district.

38% of NY voters consider Ocasio-Cortez a "villain" (compared to 12% who consider her a hero) for her role in the Amazon deal's collapse. That number topped the share of villain votes for any other elected official, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Senate as a whole.

Speaking on WAMC radio Monday morning, Cuomo said he's not surprised by the poll's finding that most New Yorkers believe the collapse of the deal was bad for the state.

Ocasio-Cortez' district encompasses Queens, and on the day the company announced its withdrawal, she declared in that tweet that New Yorkers "defeated Amazon's corporate greed" through their activism.

However, Ocasio-Cortez recently signaled that she's not completely opposed to Amazon coming to NY.

According to the poll, 38% of those polled said that Ocasio-Cortex was the "biggest villain" in the saga, said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg. "However, voters say the biggest villain was Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez". 67 percent of New Yorkers also think it's getting harder to conduct business in the Empire State.

New Yorkers agree that losing Amazon will hurt.

Both Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly see Amazon's retreat as bad for the state, with 67 percent saying the fallout will hurt NY.

A February Siena College poll of 778 registered voters from across the state reported 56 percent of respondents approved Amazon building a Queens headquarters and receiving tax incentives, while 36 percent disapproved.

More than half of voters say NY is too far to the Left.... In their original offer, Amazon promised their new headquarters would bring 25,000 new jobs and a couple of billion dollars to build a state-of-the-art campus for their employees. Amazon also called out Ocasio-Cortez as a key reason the deal fell through.

In response to a similar Gallup poll released last week, which found the lawmaker underwater with white voters and men, the congresswoman argued that Fox News is to blame for her deep unpopularity among conservatives. 53 percent of New Yorkers support the adult recreational use of marijuana.

Hero: Ocasio-Cortez is a hero to some as well.

After Amazon announced they'd be pulling out of the city, Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the news. And there is strong support - among all demographic groups - for Amazon to reconsider and move forward. There is an overwhelming feeling that its cancellation was bad for the state. As Greenberg put it, "Clearly, jobs outweigh the cost of government incentives in the minds of most voters". It has margin of error of 4.2 percentage points.
