Lori Loughlin Free After Posting $1 Million Bond In College Admissions Scam

The mastermind of the scheme, William "Rick" Singer, on Tuesday pleaded guilty to racketeering charges.

The 56-year-old actress and her husband William H Macy, the star of Showtime's hit series "Shameless", allegedly paid US$15,000 for their eldest daughter to perform well on a college entrance exam. Macy was mentioned in the case but has not been charged.

The consequences of Felicity Huffman's alleged actions in the shocking college admissions scam just became real. He could not be reached for immediate comment. Both women, along with Lori's fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, have been arrested and charged with bribing coaches and college officials hundreds of thousands of dollars to get their kids into elite schools.

Some 33 parents, including Huffman and Loughlin, were charged, as well as 13 coaches and associates of Singer's business.

"These parents are a catalog of wealth and privilege", U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling said at a news conference in Boston, where the indictments in the scandal were handed up. Macy was not charged, but authorities did not say why.

A former Yale soccer coach reportedly pleaded guilty and helped build the case against others.

According to the US-based media reports, Hollywood actresses Huffman and Lori Loughlin have been charged along with almost 50 other people in what the USA prosecutors say was a scheme in which wealthy parents paid bribes to get their children into some of the nation's most elite colleges by faking or facilitating ACT/SAT exams.

A Hallmark Channel spokeswoman said the network hasn't decided what effect, if any, her arrest will have on programming.

In particular, the coaches worked at such schools as Yale, Stanford, Georgetown, Wake Forest, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California and the University of California at Los Angeles, faking profiles of the applicants, regardless of their actual abilities in sports.

In many cases, the students were not aware their parents had arranged for the cheating, prosecutors said, although in other cases they knowingly took part.

Meanwhile, Huffman has been charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

Lelling said the investigation is continuing and authorities believe other parents were involved. Stanford fired the sailing coach, and USC dropped its water polo coach and an athletic administrator.
