Lawyer says he was behind Carlos Ghosn’s ‘disguise’ during release

Takashi Takano a lawyer for Carlos Ghosn walks out the main building as he leads a group of security guards surrounding Carlos Ghosn at the Tokyo Detention House

Chairman Carlos Ghosn apologized Friday for attempting to disguise him as a workman in a move that backfired and made global headlines when Ghosn was released on bail two days ago, saying he had embarrassed his client.

A lawyer representing ex-Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn on Friday apologised for "tainting" the tycoon's reputation by suggesting he disguise himself as a workman to leave detention on bail.

Mr Ghosn paid the 1 billion yen ($9 million) bail, among the highest ever in Japan, after the Tokyo District Court rejected a last-ditch appeal by prosecutors to keep him in jail.

Not only did the widely mocked getup - meant to throw reporters off the scent - fool no one, it heightened already intense media interest in Ghosn, who was released on bail on Wednesday.

But instead of going unnoticed, Ghosn's outfit caused a media frenzy on Japanese television after he was spotted wearing a surgical mask, a construction worker's outfit, and a blue cap, and taken away in a work van with a ladder on top.

Carlos Ghosn was seen outside his residence on Friday afternoon. After the Tokyo District Court accepted his bail request, Ghosn emphasized his innocence in a statement made through a US representative, saying, "I am innocent". Ghosn is facing a number of criminal charges from his time at the automaker.

Ghosn has maintained his innocence since his arrest and claimed the allegations against him are part of a "plot" by opponents of greater integration between the three firms.

Takano asked the media to give his client privacy, saying people who face trial need to regain their normal lives.

At a press conference Hironaka said their team took an aggressive strategy to secure bail by advocating strict terms to quell concerns about Ghosn fleeing the country or tampering with evidence and witnesses.

"The disguise was all planned and carried out by me", Takano wrote.

"I feel sorry about that. due to my amateur plan, the fame he has built over a lifetime was tainted".

Takano said his only goal had been to prevent the media from locating Ghosn's residence. "We definitely needed to avoid such situation". He and several others, believed to be his wife and daughters, visited a downtown Tokyo garden as members of the media trailed them and watched. Mr Ghosn was widely identified and photographed as he left prison on bail on Wednesday. Media in helicopters and on motorbikes later tracked the vehicle around Tokyo.
