Labour leader Corbyn demands general election after Theresa May’s Brexit defeat

May says UK can still leave EU with ‘good deal

According to a survey by Conservative Home, support for the beleaguered Prime Minister's Brexit deal has actually doubled among Tory party members.

He told MPs they had "a solemn duty in the days ahead to put aside our differences and seek a compromise".

May intends to get parliamentary approval of her Brexit plan before an European Union summit starting next Thursday.

Wordsworth's dancing daffodils do look golden in Downing Street but inside Number 10, where Britain's embattled Prime Minister is holed up nursing a sore throat after non-stop negotiations with Brussels over her Brexit deal, the mood is anything but sunny.

Speaking after the rejection of her deal on Tuesday by 391 votes to 242, the Prime Minister told the Commons that MPs will now have to decide whether they want to delay Brexit beyond March 29, the designated date of departure; hold another referendum; or whether they "want to leave with a deal but not this deal".

Her exchanges with Corbyn involved the Labour leader repeatedly urging the prime minister to outline a new plan for Brexit, and to consider backing the Labour proposal, under which the United Kingdom would stay in some form of customs union.

Within government, there is renewed optimism that success is possible.

Earlier, there was a chink of light for Theresa May as an amendment tabled by Hillary Benn MP which would have seen her lose effective control of the Parliamentary timetable was defeated by just 2 votes.

But despite the growth in support for her deal, Conservative Home pointed out that 56% of respondents are still opposed to the revised deal.

But although she managed to convince about 40 Tory MPs to change their mind, it was not almost enough to overturn the historic 230 vote defeat she suffered on the same deal in January.

Leading Tory Remainers and Brexiteers, including Dominic Grieve and Boris Johnson, have suggested the prime minister's deal is now "finished" and other options must be brought forward.

In response, May said only that there would be "hard choices" for MPs, both on the vote over no deal, and if that is ruled out, a vote on Thursday over whether to extend article 50.

'While an extension of Article 50 is now inevitable, responsibility for that extension lies exclusively and squarely at the Prime Minister's door'.

The decision to drop all checks to avoid friction at the UK's land border with the European Union will be temporary while longer term solutions are negotiated.

A European commission spokesman said the vote was not enough and London had to choose between a deal or a no deal exit.

"I would be delighted if a consensus emerges behind the Prime Minister's deal over the next day or two".
