Copenhagen gets top ten spot in quality of life ranking for international professionals

Following Singapore's lead in the ranking are five Japanese cities, namely Tokyo, Kobe, Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya, according to Mercer's quality of living survey.

Once ranked the best Indian city to live in, according to the 2011 Mercer Quality of Living report, the city slipped from a global rank of 141 to 149 in 2018 and continues at that spot this year too. Gambia's progress toward a democratic political system and improved worldwide relations and human rights meant that Banjul (179) had the most improved quality of living in Africa, but also in the world, rising six places this year. London remained the highest-ranked overall at 44th despite coming last in Britain in a separate personal safety ranking.

At the bottom end of the scale, African and Middle Eastern cities facing security issues came out worst, with Baghdad propping up the table despite "significant improvements in security and sanitation services in recent years".

According to Mercer, the rankings are created to enable multinational companies and other organizations to compensate employees fairly when placing them on global assignments.

Mercer said all U.S. cities covered in the analysis fell in the rankings this year, with the exception of NY, which rose one place to 44th, as crime rates there continue to fall.

Vancouver, at number 3, is the best-ranked city in North America, the same survey shows, while Washington DC (53rd) is the biggest faller. Personal safety is the cornerstone of stability in any city, without which both business and talent can not thrive.

Western Europe dominated Mercer's new safety ranking with Luxembourg at the top of the list. This year, Mercer provides a separate ranking on personal safety. The data were regularly updated to account for changing circumstances.

One thing not considered is Vancouver's high cost of housing.
