Key student striker rejects Leo's support until urgent climate action taken

The students, who are marching as part of an global, youth-driven "School Strike 4 Climate", plan to walk first to Alameda City Hall and then back to Crab Cove, where speakers will address the assembled crowd.

Last month, more than 10,000 pupils across the United Kingdom sought their parents' permission and left classrooms in Glasgow, Leeds, Exeter, London and Brighton to join UK-wide climate strikes.

Māori Climate Commissioner Donna Awatere-Huata said she had no qualms about encouraging schoolchildren to strike for action on climate change.

In the months since Thunberg began her weekly action, a contingent of like-minded climate activists has followed suit around the world. "The science has been clear for a really long time, but we've never really faced the issue head on".

A small number of parents had contacted Yeatman, but they were not in support of students missing class for the strike.

"We have been overwhelmed with the volume and speed of responses to the open letter, over 1500 New Zealand researchers, academics and educators have signed the open letter in support of the School Strike 4 Climate movement in Aotearoa to stand in solidarity with rangatahi and their youth climate movement".

"[Strikers are] letting the school know that [climate change is] actually serious and we need to be doing this Not just the school, people in general like the community and everyone around the community", she said. And then on the second day, people started joining me.
