Johnny Manziel reportedly signs deal to join AAF

The San Antonio Commanders originally held Manziel's territorial rights in the AAF, but have passed on signing the Texas native and former Aggies star, Schefter reported.

Just weeks after he was released by his Canadian Football League team and essentially banned from signing anywhere else, the former Heisman Trophy victor gets yet another shot to show that he has something left in the tank.

"We are pleased to welcome Johnny Manziel to Alliance of American Football, which we've always described as a league of opportunity for talented players to launch or revitalize their pro football careers", Alliance co-founder Bill Polian said in a statement released by the league. The former Texas A&M Heisman Trophy victor was released from his CFL contract last month, with league officials announcing he had "contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league". Every team in the AAF will now have a chance to sign him in reverse order of the current standings, with the Memphis Express (1-5) getting first priority. The Canadian league said he violated his agreement with it, but has offered no specifics.

In Memphis, Manziel could get an opportunity to play quickly. The Express lost quarterback Zach Mettenberger on Saturday, who left after their first offensive snap with an ankle injury - according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. He was traded to the Alouettes in 2018 and released on February 27. Other than Orlando, which has Garrett Gilbert at quarterback, most of the league's teams have had some issues at the position. But Manziel had to fulfil certain requirements to join the league. Manziel had sought treatment for anger management and alcohol abuse as part of his acquittal on a 2016 charge of domestic violence. It was his first football action since he was released by the NFL's Cleveland Browns following the 2015 season.

Johnny Manziel is officially joining the AAF.
