New Zealand mosque shooting: At least 49 killed after gunmen open fire

At least 49 people were killed at two mosques full of worshipers attending Friday prayers in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Ms Ardern praised the police officers and emergency services involved in locking down Christchurch schools and offices, swiftly arresting the suspect, treating victims, and the defence specialists for defusing improvised explosive devices.

Forty-two people are still being treated in hospital for injuries, including a four year old child, after an attack thought to be the deadliest directed against Muslims in the West in modern times.

The suspect who claimed responsibility for the shootings left a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto in which he explained who he was and his reasoning for the attack.

The prime minister said the events in Christchurch represented "an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence" and acknowledged many of those affected may be migrants and refugees.

Alphabet Inc's YouTube said: "Please know we are working vigilantly to remove any violent footage".

Witness Mohan Ibrahim said he was one of 200 people in the Masjid Al Noor mosque on Deans Avenue in Christchurch when he heard shots fired. Some pointed to the fact he did name Coptic Christians and call out anti-Semitism in previous tweets when killers attacked Egyptian churches in 2017 and a synagogue in Pittsburgh last fall.

Witnesses told media that a man dressed in a military-style, camouflage outfit, and carrying an automatic rifle had started randomly shooting people in the Al Noor mosque.

New Zealand Cricket said they had chose to cancel the test, which was scheduled to start at Hagley Oval on Saturday, after discussions with the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

"I want to reassure all New Zealanders that we are doing absolutely everything in our power to respond to this attack, and deploying all available resources in communities across New Zealand", Bush said.

Prosecutors in Bulgaria launched a probe into a recent visit to the country by the terrorist behind the attack. Scheer said he was only there to support the energy workers, not the "other elements that tried to associate themselves with the event".

CNN cites a 2015 study that reported New Zealand had an adjusted rate of about 1 gun death per 100,000 people, while in 2017, the United States has an adjusted rate of 12 gun deaths per 100,000 people.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer has issued a revised statement on the terrorist attacks in New Zealand after being criticized for not mentioning that the attack was against Muslims at mosques during their Friday prayers. It has been rebuilding since an natural disaster in 2011 killed 185 people and destroyed many downtown buildings.
