Jared Kushner used messaging app in White House: Cummings

The Oversight Committee, which is investigating the White House's practices, said it has obtained information from the personal lawyer for Mr. Kushner and Ms. Trump, who are married.

Kushner, according to Politico, reportedly uses WhatsApp to communicate with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

When they controlled House committees during the administration of President Barack Obama, Republicans aggressively investigated how Hillary Clinton used a private email server while secretary of state, and complained when then- FBI Director James Comey announced no criminal charges were warranted.

Cummings said the administration has not provided the panel with a "single piece of paper" since he requested a batch of records - as well as a briefing by White House officials - last December.

President Trump's adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner used the encrypted messaging service WhatsApp as well as his personal email account to conduct official business, a top House Democrat charged Thursday.

In the letter, Cummings noted that Kushner's lawyer had told Congress in December that Kushner used WhatsApp as part of his official duties but did not say whether such messages included classified information.

It was unclear whether Kushner continued to use WhatsApp after the December meeting.

As to whether Kushner shared classified information, Lowell replied: 'That's above my pay grade'.

Section 2209 of the statue stipulates White House officials are required to forward a "complete copy" of "official business conducted using non-official electronic messaging accounts" to "an official electronic messaging account of the President, Vice President, or covered employee" no later than 20 days after the creation of the communication. Cummings noted that in October 2017, White House lawyers briefed committee staff and "confessed" that several White House employees had failed to forward official records from their personal email accounts to their government accounts within 20 days, although they refused to identify the staffers.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said in a letter that Trump's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, informed the committee late past year that Trump doesn't preserve official emails she receives in her personal account if she doesn't respond to them.

He suggested the committee contact the White House or National Security Council for more information.

The details about Kushner's use of e-mail and messaging came up because of a new House Oversight Committee demand for documents from Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump as well as from former Trump strategist Steve Bannon and former Deputy National Security Adviser K.T. McFarland. According to Cummings, when Lowell was asked if Kushner ever communicated classified information on WhatsApp, Lowell responded, "That's above my paygrade".

Lowell's response Thursday said that he was discussing specifically a period before September 2017.

In his letter, Cummings said he would give the White House until April 4th to cooperate with the committee's investigation voluntarily. Lowell added he later told the committee, "Now she always forwards official business to her White House account".

That proposal is under investigation by Cummings' committee, which is looking into information from whistleblowers who have said they witnessed "abnormal acts" within the Trump National Security Council involving senior White House officials who were pushing the plan.

Robert Giuffra, a lawyer for McFarland, declined comment.

"The White House has received Chairman Cummings' letter of March 21st".
