James Gunn Rehired to Direct 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'

James Gunn

In a huge reversal, Disney is welcoming James Gunn back to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

The outlet says that Walt Disney Studios president Horn met with the filmmaker multiple times to discuss the controversy over Gunn's firing last July.

Deadline reported Friday that Disney actually pondered and made the final decision about bringing Gunn back to the Guardians film months ago.

Back in July 2018, Gunn was sacked by Disney when controversial tweets, from many years prior, resurfaced where Gunn made joked about pedophilia and rape.

James Gunn had completed his script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and production was scheduled to begin early this year. Persuaded by Gunn's public apology and his handling of the situation after, Horn chose to reverse course and reinstate Gunn. Gunn was sacked from the post last July after an alt-right brigade resurfaced decade-old Tweets written by Gunn, wherein he'd made crass jokes about rape and pedophilia. A Change.org petition calling for Disney to rehire Gunn has garnered almost 430,000 signatures.

"My words of almost a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative", his July 2018 statement read.

Following news of Disney reversing their decision and rehiring Gunn for the third Guardians film, Gunn shared an emotional thank you to all of his fans.

James Gunn has received a second chance.

In an interview with the Sun in 2017, Gunn revealed that his involvement with Marvel was going to extend past Guardians 3. "Love you to you all". "My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over". But in the wake of his firing, Gunn lined up DC's Suicide Squad 2 for rival Warner Bros. The first two films have made more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales.

The "Guardians" cast released an open letter later that month in full support of Gunn and the movie's star, Chris Pratt, personally said he'd "love to see him reinstated as director of Volume 3".
