Inflation remains tame in February

Retail inflation climbs to 2.57%, factory output decelerates to 1.7%

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 7 February changed its stance from calibrated tightening to neutral and cut the policy rate by 25 basis points on the back of benign headline retail inflation and slowing global growth.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the government's primary inflation gauge, rose 0.2 percent in February after being flat the month before.

The retail inflation for the month of January 2019 stood at 2.05 per cent, but was later revised to 1.97 per cent.

Food price inflation for rural areas stood at (-) 1.75 in February 2019 against (-) 2.80 per cent in January and 3.70per cent in February past year. The broader CPI rose 0.2 percent from January, the first increase in four months, though the 1.5 percent annual gain missed projections and was the smallest rise since 2016.

"We project a 0.19% MoM core reading with potential upside risk from strong apparel prices but downside risk from a pull-back in used vehicle prices". Gas prices for U.S. drivers were $2.31 a gallon on average in February, up from $2.25 in January, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Excluding the volatile food and fuel categories, CPI slowed to 2.1 percent, after three months of 2.2 percent gains. That index tends to run slightly below the Labor Department's CPI, and January figures are due March 29.

Expenses for medical care fell 0.2 per cent, the biggest decline since 2013; these readings often vary from results for this category within the Fed's preferred measure of inflation due to different methodologies. Food consumed at home rose 0.4 per cent last month, boosted by more expensive dairy products, fresh vegetables, cereals and meat.

On a monthly basis, the consumer food price index moved up by 0.15 per cent in February against January 2019. It hit the USA central bank's 2 percent inflation target in March previous year for the first time since April 2012. The so-called core CPI had increased by 0.2 percent for five straight months. They were held down by a 1.0 per cent decline in the price of prescription medication and a 0.7 per cent drop in the cost of hospital services.
