Ichiro Suzuki To Announce Retirement After Game In Japan

In 2013, Ichiro recorded his 4,000th hit (MLB and Japan combined), joining Pete Rose and Ty Cobb as only the third player to achieve the feat at the highest professional level.

But if the whole point of the M's participating in the Japan opener was to celebrate Ichiro and all that he's done for the Mariners and baseball in general in the Pacific Northwest, that point was unfortunately lost in translation - and a 16-hour time difference - while most M's fans were sleeping.

It was definitely Ichiro, 45 years old and playing in the last game of an unprecedented global career, back in his home country, with a chance to give the Mariners a win.

He added that he was "honoured to end my big league career where it started, with Seattle, and think it is fitting that my last games as a professional were played in my home country of Japan".

Ichiro hanging them up this season wasn't unexpected, but the timing was.

A native of Nichi Kasugai-gun, Japan, Ichiro joined the Mariners in 2001 following a nine-year career in the NPB with the Orix BlueWave.

Report: Ichiro To Announce Retirement From MLB

He trotted to right field for the bottom half of the inning, but Seattle manager Scott Servais stopped the game before a pitch was thrown to pull Ichiro and give the crowd a chance to honor one of the greatest players in history.

"I do not know well whether it is success, I cannot judge that at all".

Ichiro is retiring. That might not be much of a surprise for your typical 37-year-old player or 40-year-old player or 43-year-old player, much less the 45-year-old player he is now.

None the least of which includes Ichiro telling reporters in 2007 that he would "punch himself in the face" if he ever lied about wanting to come here.

He also making stops with the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins along the way. Yusei Kikuchi, who also is from Japan and played in the Nippon Professional League, made his MLB debut Thursday and was brought to tears as the 2001 American League MVP said goodbye. "It's just happiness. Of course, I thought about the fans in Seattle".
