'Huge lifeline' as India court scraps Sreesanth's life ban for fixing

SC lifts Sreesanth’s life ban, its BCCI’s call now

In a relief for the pace bowler, the apex court set aside the life ban imposed on him as a bench headed by Ashok Bhushan asked the BCCI to consider the quantum of punishment on Sreesanth. The apex court, in its ruling, further said that the 35-year-old cricketer should be given an opportunity to be heard by BCCI's disciplinary committee on the quantum of the punishment. "I am sure the BCCI will be kind to me and the decision will be in my favour", he said.

December 7, 2018: Sreesanth, in a statement before the Supreme Court bench, says that the life ban sentenced handed to him by the BCCI is "too harsh". Meanwhile, Sreesanth appeared on Bigg Boss 12 and in an interview with Pinkvilla had reiterated how much he misses cricket and would love to be back on the field. It is nearly six years I am out of cricket.

In the wake of these new developments, Bhuvaneswari, Sreesanth's wife said that the cricketer has finally got justice. He also expressed hope to play in Scottish League which starts in April.

India's Supreme Court scrapped cricketer Shanthakumaran Sreesanth life ban for match-fixing on Friday but stopped short of acquitting the paceman.

Sreesanth, 36, was arrested for illegal betting and spot-fixing during the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) along with teammates Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila.

The bench passed this order on Sreesanth's plea challenging the decision of a division bench of the Kerala High Court which had restored the life ban imposed on him by the BCCI. The apex court observes that Sreesanth's conduct, who is facing a life ban for his alleged involvement in the sensational spot-fixing scandal, in the entire episode was "not good".

The former cricketer, who was arrested and later discharged by a trial court here in July 2015 in a criminal case related to the alleged spot-fixing, had claimed he had to confess his involvement in the alleged crime as police tortured him in custody and threatened to implicate his family in the case.
