'He is very tired' - Menotti anxious about Messi ahead of Argentina friendlies

Legendary manager admits he’s afraid of ‘emotionally fatigued’ Barcelona star playing

Lionel Messi will only take part in one of Argentina's two global friendlies this week, despite not having played for the national team in nine months.

Argentina goalkeeper Juan Musso said it is an "honour" to have Lionel Messi return to the worldwide stage.

Messi, 31, is set to make his global return after missing his nation's matches since last year's World Cup in Russian Federation.

The five-time Ballon d'Or victor netted three times against Real Betis on Sunday as the Spanish champions extended their lead at the top of the table to 10 points. We have been very up front with him and I'm here to help.

Now it seems a hamstring strain will keep him from bringing that quality to his national team for the time being.

Musso is hoping to make his first senior appearance for Argentina having joined Udinese from Racing Club in 2018.

Argentina & Cesar Luis Menotti Argentina are gearing up for their final two warm up matches before this summer's Copa America in Brazil.

Argentina played six times without Messi to close 2018, including friendly wins over Guatemala, Iraq and two wins over Mexico.

But Menotti, who won the World Cup as Argentina boss in 1978 and later managed Barcelona for a season in 1983/84, admits that he doesn't think Messi should play in his country's upcoming matches.

Argentina will play Venezuela at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium on March 23.

After a poor World Cup in Russian Federation, coach Lionel Scaloni could do without losing one of his in-form players as he looks to rejuvenate his squad ahead of the Copa America this summer.
