Google is redeploying Pixel staff, raising questions on its future hardware plans

Google is reportedly cutting back on hardware, moving some workers to new jobs

Over the past few years, Google has been pushing deeper into the hardware business with products like the Pixelbook, Pixel Slate, multiple Google Homes, and of course, Pixel phones, with the latter getting a big boost thanks to Google's $1.1 billion (£820 million) acquisition of tech and personnel from HTC last year. Google hasn't had much success with most of its hardware offerings, and a recent report from Business Insider indicates that this is unlikely to change in the short term future too. Sources say projects have been canceled within the laptop and tablet division, prompting the changes, but that team members have been instructed to find new roles temporarily within the Google or Alphabet organization.

According to Business Insider, Google is now in the process of implementing a number of "roadmap cutbacks".

According to a report from Business Insider, Google is pulling employees from their laptop and tablet hardware teams, placing them on other projects as the company addresses "roadmap cutbacks".

For now, Google is asking affected employees to seek temporary roles, meaning that the company could revert the alleged downsizing down the line. However, shortly after launch, numerous users reported issues with the Pixel Slate's performance, particularly when using the device in laptop mode, which forced Google to address the lag later via software updates. The Pixel Slate was a weird Chrome OS tablet with a detachable keyboard, made as a competitor to the Microsoft Surface and Apple iPad Pro. The hardware market for laptops is fiercely competitive, and all of Google's (overpriced) efforts in this space have failed to capture the market. But according to one person familiar with the matter, the Create group had a "bunch of stuff in the works" and that the cutting the number of hardware engineers and program managers on the team will likely "pare down the portfolio" of products.

This does not mean we will see Google's Chromebook running Chrome OS going away.

Following the Pixel C came the Pixelbook, which was widely regarded as one of the best, most luxurious Chromebooks ever made.

Google is the disputed king when it comes to software and associated technologies, but the same can not be said for hardware.
