GM says judge should toss union's suit over idling of Lordstown plant

A

We remain open to talking with all affected stakeholders, but our main focus remains on our employees and offering them jobs in our plants where we have growth opportunities.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra on the automaker's plans to build an electric vehicle plant at a plant in Orion, Michigan, President Trump's criticisms of the company's decision to close a plant in Lordstown, Ohio and the company's commitment to jobs in America.

The Bolt EV is the only current vehicle to ride on GM's BEV2 platform, which can be considered in some ways an offshoot of GM's Gamma 2 architecture underpinning the Chevrolet Sonic and Trax.

GM also announced plans to spend another $1.4 billion at USA factories with 300 more jobs but didn't offer details.

Additional product information and timing for the new Chevrolet EV will be released closer to production.

The expansion of the Orion plant stacks on the plan GM announced past year about investment and expansion plans at some of its other plants for a total of 2,700 job openings. GM's investment into trucks will add 1,000 jobs at its Flint Truck Assembly Plant, its Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant, and the Romulus Propulsion Plant.

GM has said it can place about 2,700 of the laid-off us workers at other factories, but it's unclear how many will uproot and take those positions.

The new auto was originally expected to be built outside the U.S., but GM CEO Mary Barra said at an event announcing the new vehicle that terms of the new U.S./Mexico/Canada trade agreement encouraged the company to build it in the U.S.

Production of the new electric vehicle had been planned for a site outside of the United States, but GM opted to build it at the Orion plant for a number of reasons. The company has promised to introduce 20 new all-electric vehicles globally by 2023.

Moving production to a USA manufacturing plant also supports the rules of origin provisions in the proposed United States, Mexico and Canada Agreement, according to a news release. To date, 1,100 employees have been placed at other GM plants, with several hundred more in the process of being placed in new jobs.

In November, GM announced plans to shut the four USA factories and one in Canada.

The company said Friday it will spend $300 million in Orion Township to build a Chevrolet vehicle based on the battery-powered Bolt. The state helped push him to victory in 2016, and Trump has focused on Lordstown, seldom mentioning the other US factories that GM is slated to close.

He tweeted an attack on UAW Local 1112 President Dave Green, head of the union that represents Lordstown workers. "We want to create jobs, good-paying jobs".

Barra said after event that GM "supports" the proposed United States, Mexico and Canada Agreement "and we are making adjustments because we will comply" with new rules requiring additional North American content.
