FCA Recalls Nearly 900000 Vehicles In the U.S

Jeeps in Detroit

The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Wednesday that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has agreed to voluntarily recall almost 900,000 vehicles over emissions violations.

Owners who live in places where vehicles are checked to ensure that they're meeting emissions compliance "may be required to have the recall performed prior to having the inspection performed" because the auto is likely to fail the test in this condition, the EPA said in a statement.

"This issue was discovered by FCA during routine in-use emissions testing and reported to the agency".

Fiat Chrysler said in a statement the EPA announcement "has no safety implications".

These include the 2011 to 2014 Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, 2011 to 2016 Dodge Journey, 2011 to 2012 Dodge Caliber, and 2011 to 2016 Jeep Compass and Patriot.

Owners of affected vehicles need to wait until they receive notification from FCA prior to scheduling an appointment at the dealership.

FCA will replace the catalytic converters - devices in the exhaust system of motor vehicles which convert pollutant gases into less harmful substances - on the affected vehicles.

Its U.S. -traded shares were down almost 1 percent. That means owners of the above Dodge-, Chrysler-, and Jeep-brand vehicles won't be able to register their cars in the Golden State without returning them for the necessary fixes. Unlike previous Fiat-Chrysler emissions recalls, these fixes require replacement parts. These two factors are "associated with premature death, asthma emergency room visits, increased hospitalizations due to exacerbation of chronic heart and lung diseases, and other serious health impacts".

The hefty penalty was the latest fallout from the US government's stepped-up enforcement of vehicle emissions rules after Volkswagen AG admitted in September 2015 to intentionally evading emissions rules.
