FBI Debated in 2016 How Aggressively to Probe Trump Campaign

FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok testifies before a House Judiciary Committee joint hearing on

Former FBI agent Peter Strzok did not believe his affair with FBI lawyer Lisa Page could have made him vulnerable to blackmail by foreign operatives, according to recently released transcripts of his closed-door interview with the House Judiciary Committee.

Collins had released transcripts of the committee's closed-door interview with Page earlier this week.

In one text on August 8, 2016, Strzok told Page that "we'll stop" Trump from becoming president.

Kerik's remarks came in response to transcripts showing former Federal Bureau of Investigation legal counsel Lisa Page testified to Congress that the Department of Justice ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation not to charge Clinton with "gross negligence" for mishandling classified information.

The Strzok testimony, which is from June 2018, is creating a buzz on social media and appears to offer more insight into the FBI's activities during the 2016 presidential election season. But Page, in 2018, told House lawmakers that whatever she had to say about Trump or Clinton in the past, it didn't affect the quality of investigations.

Strzok was removed in 2017 from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigative team following the discovery of the messages with attorney Lisa Page.

"No he won't. We'll stop it", Strzok replied.

FBI officials, including then-Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, debated internally how vigorously to follow up on that information given that Democrat Hillary Clinton was seen at the time as likely to defeat Trump, and an aggressive investigation had the potential of endangering the source. The Department of Justice under President Trump has reportedly launched an investigation into whether the foundation acted as a "pay-to-play" scheme.

Rep. Doug Collins, Georgia Republican, inserted the transcripts into the Congressional Record during a floor speech, defying a Justice Department that he felt was moving too slowly to clear the information for public consumption.

Asked in general terms whether he had "ever been part of the FBI's efforts to infiltrate a US political campaign" or "been part of an effort to put a spy in a USA political campaign", Strzok said no.

The Strzok-Page texts were discovered during an investigation of the FBI's handling of the Clinton email investigation.

In her testimony, Page also explained that she considered the possibility of the Trump campaign colluding with Russian Federation to be a much bigger deal than Clinton's mishandling of top-secret government information while she was secretary of state.
