Facebook's No. 3, Chris Cox, is leaving after privacy pivot

Facebook Chief Product Officer Chris Cox

Zuckerberg said in a Thursday blog post that chief product officer Chris Cox - who joined the social network in 2005 when it was still in its infancy - was leaving to "do something else".

Two of Facebook's top executives are leaving the social network - a week after its boss Mark Zuckerberg announced a big strategic pivot toward private messaging. In May, Cox was put in charge of Facebook's "family of apps", including Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Facebook itself - which together have over 2.7 billion users worldwide.

Cox's bombshell comes just one week after Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would become a "privacy-focused" company.

Fidji Simo, head of video, games and monetization, will be the new head of the Facebook app, Mark Zuckerberg said in a blogpost. He also built Facebook's first human resources teams and oversaw the strategy for the apps that Facebook owns, Zuckerberg wrote.

Cox and Zuckerberg appear to be divided over the company's new strategy announced last week that it would focus on privacy rather than connecting with the world at large. In a memo to employees, Zuckerberg suggested the events were linked.

With Daniels' departure, WhatsApp will be led by Will Cathcart, who most recently led the Facebook app.

Zuckerberg said he has no plans to replace Cox, though Daniels will be replaced by Will Cathcart, another longtime Facebook veteran.

Zuckerberg phrased that more delicately, noting that "We both realized we had too much important work to do to improve our products for society".

The departures follow the resignations of Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and WhatsApp's co-founder Jan Koum past year. Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, WhatApp's Brian Acton and Jan Koum and Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey have also departed.

"It's a product vision attuned to the subject matter of today: a modern communications platform that balances expression, safety, security and privacy", Cox wrote in a Facebook post.

Zuckerberg said on Thursday that Olivan will now lead the effort to integrate Facebook apps, a key move as the company encrypts conversations on more of its messaging services and makes them compatible.
