Facebook Temporarily Removed Elizabeth Warren Ads Urging Breakup Of Tech Giants

Elizabeth Warren's ads promoting a break up of Facebook were briefly taken down by the social media giant

"We break them apart, that backs up the influence a little bit, and it makes absolutely sure that they're not engaged in these unfair practices that stomp out every little business that's trying to get a start, every startup that's trying to get in there".

The proposal is part of Warren's recent announcement to "unwind anti-competitive mergers", such as Amazon with Whole Foods and Facebook with Instagram.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren's campaign for U.S. President has taken a hard line against big tech, and she has Apple in her sights.

Warren also wants to make it hard for Google, Facebook, and other Silicon Valley giants to merge, thus hurting their business models.

"We removed the ads because they violated our policies against use of our corporate logo", the spokesperson told Politico. Apparently, Facebook did not require the removal of its logo from the ads in order for them to be restored. "But in their rise to power, they've bulldozed competition, used our private information for profit, and tilted the playing field in their favor".

The argument bears a striking resemblance to arguments made by Republican politicians regarding Facebook's ability to remove or censor content with which they disagree, a complaint on the right that is generally treated like a whiny conspiracy by the left. According to POLITICO, the social media giant made a decision to restore the ads to encourage a "robust debate".

Facebook "Brand Usage in Ads" policy states: "Don't use the Facebook corporate logo in an ad". More than a dozen other related Facebook ads that featured photos of Warren instead of the video stayed on the platform. Each ad had been seen less than 5,000 times as of Monday evening with less than $100 spent to promote each post, according to data from Facebook's Ad Archive. However, soon after she clarified that by "big companies", she has the Cupertino based company Apple in mind as well.
