Facebook struggles into day two of global outage

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp suffered a global outage. What happened?

"We've now resolved the issues and our systems are recovering", the company said in a tweet.

On Twitter, Facebook blamed the outage on a "server configuration change".

Some users of Facebook and other platforms owned by the tech giant - including Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp - reported intermittent problems accessing the services and posting content. The company said it has fixed the glitch. "We're very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone's patience".

According to the website Downdetector, Facebook's outage spanned the globe, with reports of disruptions concentrated on the U.S. East Coast and in the United Kingdom. In any case, a contact within Telegram confirmed to TechCrunch's colleagues what was already quite obvious: the merit of this sudden growth is the aforementioned problems ("These outages always drive new users"), but is partly attributed to the will of a growing number of users to distance themselves from Facebook. The largest outages for Instagram were reported in the greater NY area and around Los Angeles and Toronto, according to the Downdetector.com outage map. This is an important draw for people concerned with their privacy online, particularly in light of the fact that Facebook, Inc.is reportedly now under criminal investigation for secret data sharing deals.

Facebook declined to add to the company statement on Twitter. The company has a large campus of data centers in Prineville. Amazon was reportedly allowed to see user contact information.

Facebook is facing a slew of lawsuits and regulatory inquiries over its privacy practices, including ongoing investigations by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission and two state agencies in NY.
