Facebook Face Global Crackdown Over Christchurch

Facebook reveals more details about how Christchurch terror attack video spread

The shooter live-streamed his attack and videos circulated on social media afterwards.

Facebook is under fire after a watchdog group disputed the tech giant's claim that no one reported the New Zealand massacre livestream video during the attack itself. Within 24 hours, Facebook had removed 300,000 videos and blocked another 1.2 million at upload.

The company's live stream function has come under scrutiny from advertisers, internet service providers, and the prime minister, for what they perceive as the company taking too long to remove the videos, and even making the live stream function available to all of its users in the first place.

John Berry, chief executive of Pathfinder Asset Management, said his Global Responsibility Fund had never held Facebook shares.

Last week's white nationalist terrorist attack occurred during Friday Prayer at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, and killed 50 people while injuring 50 more.

The attack was streamed live on Facebook via what is thought to be a body-mounted camera.

Mr Erdogan has faced criticism for using footage of the shootings and extracts from Tarrant's manifesto to drum up domestic support among Muslim voters.

The social media giant has said that roughly 200 people watched the Christchurch footage live but none of them reported it to moderators.

She told the country's parliament: "There is no question that ideas and language of division and hate have existed for decades, but their form of distribution, the tools of organisation, they are new".

"We can not simply sit back and accept that these platforms just exist and that what is said on them is not the responsibility of the place where they are published". "They are the publisher". 'There can not be a case of all profit no responsibility'.

Facebook's update yesterday seems created to demonstrate that the social network made reasonable efforts to prevent the video's spread despite factors outside its control.

To report live video, a user must know to click on a small set of three gray dots on the right side of the post.

Sonderby said challenges remained, including how to scrub screen recordings of the footage, so Facebook also used "additional detection systems, including the use of audio technology".

"I don't think Facebook would intentionally lie about this, especially since I'd imagine law enforcement is asking them for info", Holt said.

YouTube and Facebook have defended themselves against accusations that they failed to act quickly enough in the wake of the Christchurch terror attack, arguing that their moderation is as good as possible given the number of videos uploaded.

'The incident highlights the importance of industry cooperation regarding the range of terrorists and violent extremists operating online, ' said the group, which was formed in 2017 in response to official pressure to do more to fight online extremism. This video, like far too many others, has changed the conversation by raising awareness of the brutal treatment of African Americans by police.

Microsoft said late Tuesday it had received "the chairman's letter and we're ready to work with him, the committee, and with others to address the issues he raises".
