European clubs say will boycott FIFA's Club World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino wants to enlarge the tournament from 32 to 48 teams

"We are delighted to announce that India has been confirmed as the host of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in 2020", said Infantino after the FIFA Council meeting in Miami, USA. No host nation has been decided yet, Infantino said. If it happens, fantastic.

Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman and United Arab Emirates are all potential options yet rancorous diplomatic disputes has led to the tiny Gulf state being politically isolated from many of its former allies.

"From now on the world will see a real Club World Cup where the best clubs in the world will compete to crown the world champion", said Infantino.

Infantino said five members of the Council did not attend the meeting, the first for FIFA's leadership in the US since American law enforcement arrested numerous sport's top officials in 2015 on corruption charges. "So we'll move to the next stage and look at who could host these games, and then congress can take the final decision". Like Europe and South America, Concacaf have had one representative annually, with the Club World Cup customarily hosted in Asia.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the proposed expanded Club World Cup would be scheduled to take place in June 2021, in the slot where the Confederations Cup would have taken place.

Infantino added that club football was "evolving at a different pace in different parts of the world" and it was Fifa's duty to put on an "exciting, prestigious and inclusive competition, and we'll have that with this Club World Cup, starting in 2021".

In a letter that was leaked on Friday, the ECA's executive board, including board members at Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester United and Real Madrid, said they would not take part in any new competition until 2024 at the earliest. European club seasons typically start around mid-August.

And after hearing Infantino's announcement on Friday, the ECA issued a statement saying its clubs would not participate in 2021.

The ECA says a decision on potential new competitions can only be made as part of an agreed framework for the global match calendar post-2024. "We have held some positive, constructive discussions and will continue with this vein".

Video review has been approved for the Women's World Cup, which runs from June 7 to July 7.

There was also confirmation from Federation Internationale de Football Association that the video assistant referee system (VAR) will be used at the women's World Cup this summer.
